Abstract

|
A clinical study on 323 cases of surgical patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers who were admitted to the Dept. of surgery, K. U. H. from April 1962 to March 1968 was presented. Among 323 cases, 107 were intractable, 114 perforated, 75 massive bleeding and 27 stenotic ulcer.
The results obtained are as follows;
1. The age of the majority of the cases ranged from 4th to 5th decade. (32.8%)
2. The sex distribution assumed a rate of 5.1 to 1, with 175 males and 48 females.
3. The seasonal distribution was predominant in spring, summer and autumn.
4. The duration of illness was over 5 years in 111 cases(37.5%), presented the highest frequency.
5. X-ray demonstration of spontaneus pneumoperitoneum by simple plair was noted in 74.7% of the patients with perforated peptic ulcer.
6. The most frequent location of perforation was the anterion wall of the stomach and duodenum.(92.1%)
7. The early post operative complications were noted in 90 cases (27.9%), and the most common complications were operative wound infections (43.3%)
8. The postoperative mortality rate was 5.3 per cent.
